- Description
- This chapter addresses issues of globalisation and work in Asia by examining trends and challenges for female workers in the media and communications industries in Indonesia. Indonesia has been one of the last countries in the region to begin recovering from the 1997 Asian currency crisis and is currently in a period of slow growth. However, the ICT (Information and Communication Technology)sector is growing rapidly, and this has a direct effect on media and communications workplaces. At present women constitute only a small minority of professional workers in this occupational field, even though they graduate from communications in Indonesia in much larger numbers than men. Due to gender-biased deficiencies in their professional ICT training, and the negative effects of traditional gender stereotyping in Indonesia, female media and communications workers are likely to find that the advanced ICT aspects of globalistaion do not empower them as workers, but instead, contribute to their increasing marginalisation in the workplace.
